What Is a Vector?

In genetic medicine, a vector is the delivery system. The therapy may be the genetic payload, but the payload has to reach the right cells before it can do anything useful. Some vectors are engineered from viruses because viruses naturally know how to enter cells. Other delivery systems use lipid nanoparticles or nonviral platforms.

In genetic medicine, a vector is the delivery system. The therapy may be the genetic payload, but the payload has to reach the right cells before it can do anything useful. Some vectors are engineered from viruses because viruses naturally know how to enter cells. Other delivery systems use lipid nanoparticles or nonviral platforms.

Why it matters

Delivery is one of the hardest problems in genetic medicine. A therapy can be beautifully designed and still fail if it cannot reach the right tissue, enters too few cells, triggers an immune response, or cannot carry a large enough payload. For families, the vector often shapes who can receive a treatment and what risks must be monitored.

How it works

Scientists choose or engineer a vector based on where the therapy needs to go. AAV vectors are common in gene therapy because they can deliver genetic material to certain tissues, but they have size limits and immune considerations. Researchers study biodistribution, dose, pre-existing antibodies, manufacturing consistency, and whether the vector reaches the cells that matter for the disease.
